Josh and I spent the night last night at the hospital in the parenting room with PJ. The hospital offers this as a sort of ‘practice’ with your baby. He was hooked up to an EKG and breathing monitor so that we wouldn’t panic. But I didn’t get more than an hour’s worth of sleep anyway. Josh didn’t fare much better. We were up a lot checking to see if he was ok. Of course, in the NICU, almost every time we saw him he was asleep! Last night he was awake almost all night long! I felt so inadequate! Didn’t know when to feed, when to hold, when to change, when to burp, when to just ignore his little chattering. Seemed like he got hungry a lot. They feed him a bottle of breast milk every three hours, but he seemed to want to nurse every hour! The NICU nurses said, oh, boy, don’t let him get into that practice, you’ll be a human pacifier! Then I read in the Dr. Sears book on breastfeeding that you should become a human pacifier – they need the comfort, they do better when you nurse on cue. What to do!
