Feeding a mouse

Peanut butter in mouse trapWell, we have a mouse in the house. Eeek. I saw a black tail go down our heating/cooling vent in the kitchen. It was a fleeting moment and I did not want to believe it. Miriam was still here – she had gone to Applebee’s to watch an ASU game. I called and she volunteered to stop at Walmart to get a trap.

I had her get one of those “humane” traps where you bait it and the mouse gets trapped in a box. Then it is your choice how to dispose of him. Anyway, our mouse has been getting a lot of Simply Jif Creamy Peanut Butter the last couple of nights. I thought our mouse was too smart or our trap was not working. I finally examined things today and saw that the mouse didn’t actually have to step on the trigger to reach the big gob of peanut butter I had placed inside.

Tonite, I put a smaller gob in the middle on a tiny piece of cracker. And I set a second trap nearby, just in case there is more than one critter. Josh and I were talking in the den and we heard the doors SNAP! We ran to investigate. My bait was on the floor beside the trap. The doors were shut. And the trap was empty!

Placement of trapSo now we have just a small gob of peanut butter in the middle, no cracker. I really hope it is not a rat. I can handle a mouse being in the house, but a rat would really gross me out. It’s got to be small, whatever it is – the gap in the dishwasher and the vent are quite small. If I don’t have any progress in the next 24 hours, we’re going to have to bump up to the inhumane methods…

PJ and Eliza are starting to play together some. Here’s a sample:
