Girl Names

So I wanted to name this new baby after both of my grandmothers – Zeta (pronounced ZEETUH) Kathryn. And then call her “Z”. Or “Baby Z”. Josh is having a hard time with it both because of the actress Catherine Zeta-Jones and because in LA, Zeta is a hispanic name pronounced ZAYTUH. I’ve started calling the baby “Baby Z” anyway. I figure we can come up with a real name later. Today Josh mentioned Eliza Mae. I thought that actually sounded pretty neat and I can still call her “Baby Z”. And my grandmother’s middle name was Mae, and my middle name was supposed to be Mae. My other grandmother was an Inez, which also has a Z. So there are lots of options.

Inez is a form of Agnes, which means chaste. So Kathryn Inez meant “pure”, “chaste”. Zeta Mae meant “born last” or I found one place that said it meant “seeker” and Mae is “bitter”.

Looked up Eliza – it is short for Elizabeth with is of Hebrew origin and means “consecrated to God”. Not too bad. I wanted some sort of name that was biblical or meant something good. I have been thinking a lot about how God has been providing for us and had thought about a middle name of Providence. But I don’t want to have two difficult names, just in case she wants to go by something more normal sometime in her life.

Mae is short for Mary and also Hebrew in origin. It means bitter. I’m not sure what to think of that. My middle name is Marie, also a form of Mary. The mother of Jesus was a Mary. What is this about being bitter? I’ll have to think on that.
