God?

PJ had a preschool Christmas performance the other night at Holy Cross Lutheran. Holy Cross is a large facility with a big sanctuary. PJ is not keen on Christmas plays. Last year, we cast him as an angel at our church play. He at first refused to wear the costume. Then the Sunday School teachers showed him everyone else in a costume and persuaded him to just “try it on”. So he did. He refused to remove his red mittens and to wear the halo. He went along with it then. We called him a snow angel.

Anyway, this year was no exception. He didn’t want to participate in the preschool program, either. Until I told him, well, kids that participate get to have juice and cookies afterwards. Then he went along with it.

We dropped him at the front with his class and went to sit down by the Brueggemann’s and the Penny’s (the other resident couples that we do preschool with). When the narrator grabbed the microphone and introduced the pre-play puppets, Eliza was amazed. She looked all around the sanctuary, and finally stopped at the ceiling.

She said, “God?”

I tried to point out the guy with the microphone, but she did not make the connection. This is the first time as far as I know that she’s heard an amplified voice. She stuck with her theory that it was God and continued to have a bit of a conversation with Him. I think she really must talk to Him at times. I just don’t know where else she would have come up with this!

So PJ sort of participated in his class part. He did a lot of ninja looking poses during the singing. Last year, he hid from all the flashes of pictures being taken and made angry faces, so I suppose this is an improvement!

When I asked if he wanted to participate in the church Christmas play, he decided a flat no. So we didn’t push it.
