Potty Training

Yes, I thought if I did infant potty training that I would not have potty training issues with PJ. WRONG! But he seems to have the opposite problem of every other boy I know (save one – I’ll get to that in a minute). He will poo in the potty, but doesn’t care about being wet. Most other boys like to pee in the potty, but not poo. Well, my friend Kathryn Fuller did infant potty training, too, and Wellborn likes to poo in the potty, but doesn’t care about peeing in it. Interesting.

Anyway, day one on this round was Wednesday. Two pee accidents. Day two was Thursday. Two pee accidents. So I thought I better go all out and do a sticker chart:

I thought we also needed a visual for accidents. My friend Sammie mentioned a money system where you take away pennies or whatever for accidents. Then there’s the betta fish suggestion from Kathryn. So here’s the combo idea. I got a fish bowl and we put in a fish (toy fish) for every pee or poo and take away 2 fish for every accident. When the bowl is full and we’ve had dry pants all day, we can go get a goldfish.

Yes, it is a lot of maintenance for every time we use the bathroom!

So, today he had 3 accidents in one hour. I was pulling my hair out. I swatted him the second time. Then I apologized and said I won’t give him spankings for accidents. I said, “It’s too much pressure, isn’t it?” “Yeah,” he said. “Can I go take two fish out, Mom?”

Then, the 3rd accident maybe 15 minutes later. Argh! I tried to be cool about it.

After a bath for both kids (watermelon and urine needed washing off), we had quiet time. I said, “PJ, if you need to go poo or pee, come on out and use the potty. Try to keep your underwear dry, OK?”

“Yes Ma’am, Momma.” This answer I have heard before.

During his abbreviated quiet time of 30 minutes, he went pee in the potty of his own volition THREE times!!! This has never been done in the history of potty training PJ. Even when he was potty trained for 6 weeks just before he was 2, I just took him to the bathroom every hour or so.

So there is still hope!
