This was my Mom’s baby book for me (italicing is mine):
Smoking and liquor
To date much has been done to inform the general public of the harmful effects of smoking. However, opinion is divided as to whether or not smoking is more hazardous during pregnancy. If you’re a heavy smoker, doctors advise that you cut down to a great extent, but you needn’t quit entirely, unless your doctor recommends it.An alcoholic beverage contains between 70 and 160 calories and might be well worth eliminating from your diet if the doctor suggests cutting down on your caloric intake. Alcohol adds calories without nourishment to your diet, and for other reasons may be harmful. Ask your doctor whether or not you may drink on occasion.
Baby grows on what you eat
Since your baby, before birth, depends solely on you for nourishment, your diet is most vital. We know that now as an expectant mother you don’t need any more food than at any other time, but the quality of the food you eat is enormously significant. It’s true that you’re eating for two, yet you must cautiously watch your weight. Excess weight may cause complications during your pregnancy, at the time of delivery, and is terribly hard to lose afterwards! The up-to-date doctor therefore “weighs in” his patients when they come for their regular examinations, and in most cases insists that they don’t gain more than 20 pounds all told. Doctors are usually real sticklers about weight gain, so take his advice seriously or you’ll be taking a scolding instead.
This means that without eating any more, and generally less than you did before, you must include all the food elements your baby needs for normal development. It is your responsibility to eat the right foods in the proper amounts.
Interesting that the main reason you would avoid alcohol was the extra calories! And gaining not more than 20 pounds! I think I gained 35 with PJ and he was born 5 weeks early!!!
